Guidelines on Mental Health Applications

Digital technologies are expanding access to mental health support, but concerns around content-quality, privacy, and user safety remain. In this context, stakeholder-specific guidelines for mental health application developers, mental health professionals, and end users have been developed. These guidelines are informed through an iterative process involving a comprehensive review of digital mental health applications available to Indian users, existing research and global frameworks, stakeholder consultations, and deliberations during the National Consultative Meeting on Digital Technologies for Mental Health at NIMHANS, Bengaluru.

Guidelines for End Users of Mental Health Applications

Digital technologies offer new opportunities to support mental health, but the rapid growth of mental health apps has also raised concerns around content quality, privacy, and user safety. Using these tools in an informed and responsible manner is essential.

To address this, the NIMHANS–ICMR Centre for Advanced Research in Digital Interventions for Mental Health Care (CAR) has come up with Guidelines for End Users of Mental Health Applications. These guidelines are based on a comprehensive review of mental health apps in India, existing research and global frameworks, and inputs from diverse stakeholders, and were further shaped during the National Consultative Meeting on Digital Technologies for Mental Health (15-17 April 2026) involving over 120+ experts from government, academia, industry, and international organizations.

The guidelines are intended to strengthen digital mental health literacy and support safe, informed, and appropriate use of mental health applications.
